Report Highlights Worsening Conditions for Christians in Middle East

A new report from the pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) indicates that conditions for Christians have deteriorated in more than half of the 18 countries monitored between August 2024 and June 2026. The study, titled "Persecuted and Forgotten? A Report on Christians Oppressed for Their Faith 2024-26," assesses the status of approximately 413 million Christians living in regions where religious freedom is under significant threat.

ACN researchers expressed particular concern regarding the survival of Christian communities in the Middle East, citing the ongoing civil war in Syria, Islamist violence, and the regional fallout from the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The report notes that Israeli military operations in Gaza and Lebanon have resulted in significant displacement, with Christian towns along the border being emptied. While the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has reported casualties at church sites, the Israeli government maintains that it does not target religious locations and expresses regret for civilian harm.

Beyond the immediate conflict, the report highlights how the February 2026 U.S.-Iran war and subsequent regional instability have intensified fears among local believers. Many now question the long-term sustainability of their presence in their ancient heartland.
