Christians Among Missing and Dead Following Devastating Nepal Floods

A catastrophic flood triggered by a glacier collapse near Langtang on August 26 has caused widespread destruction across Nepal. The disaster, which sent an ice-rock avalanche down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, resulted in over 900 to 1,000 confirmed deaths and thousands of missing persons. The surge of water, which reportedly rose nine meters in thirty minutes, devastated districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, with debris and bodies carried as far as 240 kilometers into India.

Local Christian communities have been significantly impacted, with reports of dozens of believers killed and many pastors and congregants still unaccounted for. Several church buildings have been destroyed, particularly in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot regions. Ministry partners report that severe damage to infrastructure, including electricity and mobile networks, has hindered communication and emergency relief efforts. While the government has led the rescue operations, observers have noted difficulties in the distribution of aid and concerns regarding the speed of the initial response. Christians, who comprise approximately 1.8 percent of Nepal's population, continue to face broader social and legal challenges in the country.
