Liechtenstein Prince Vetoes Proposed Abortion Law Reform

Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein has formally blocked legislation that would have liberalized the country’s abortion laws. The proposed amendment, which narrowly passed the national parliament with a 13-12 vote in September, sought to permit abortions during the first trimester without specific legal requirements and remove restrictions on advertising abortion services.

In a statement, the Princely House explained that the Prince withheld his royal assent because he believes the reform is incompatible with the protection of unborn life. Liechtenstein currently maintains some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe, generally prohibiting the procedure except in cases where the mother's life is at risk.

Rather than easing these restrictions, Prince Alois has called for increased support for pregnant women and families. The royal family has long been involved in such initiatives, notably through the Sophie von Liechtenstein Foundation, which offers financial and psychological assistance to mothers. Pro-life organizations have publicly commended the Prince’s decision, praising his commitment to both maternal support and the legal protection of the unborn.
