Democrats Gain Control of U.S. Congress in Midterm Election Results

Based on 5 sources Updated 27 minutes ago

The Democratic Party secured majorities in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate following the 2026 midterm elections. While official tallies remain ongoing, reports indicate Democrats have captured at least 227 seats in the House and 53 seats in the Senate. These results are expected to significantly impact the legislative agenda of President Donald Trump during the final two years of his term.

Democrats achieved victories in several traditionally Republican states, flipping Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas. In Kansas, Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from the state since 1932. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the nationwide Republican losses as an "extinction-level event," attributing the outcome to voter dissatisfaction with congressional Republicans rather than an endorsement of Democratic policies.

Exit polling data suggests that while white evangelical voters maintained their support for Republican candidates, other Christian demographics shifted their voting patterns compared to the 2024 election. The shift in congressional control marks a significant change in the American political landscape, with some Democratic leaders suggesting they may pursue impeachment proceedings.
