Lawyer for Beijing Zion Church pastors flees China amid legal crackdown

Ruth Wang, a partner at VDoor Law Firm, has fled China for Taiwan after authorities pressured her firm to dissolve and cease representing detained leaders from Beijing’s Zion Church. Wang, who has been part of the legal team defending Pastor Ezra Jin and other church members, decided not to return to Beijing after receiving calls from officials while traveling abroad. She is currently residing in Taiwan on a temporary basis while exploring long-term resettlement options in the United States or Canada.
Wang reports that Chinese authorities have taken punitive measures against her firm, including revoking the license of founder Zhang Kai, imposing travel bans, and suspending other attorneys from practice. These actions follow a major October 2025 crackdown in which 18 members of the Zion Church were arrested. While Pastor Jin was released in July 2026 following diplomatic discussions between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, eight other church leaders remain in custody. Advocates are now calling for their release ahead of an upcoming U.S.-China summit.
