Kenyan Gospel Singer’s Marriage Masterclass Sparks Public Debate

Kenyan gospel singer Mercy Masika has announced a seven-session program titled the "Becoming a Wife Masterclass," scheduled to run from November 21 to December 12. Organized by the Women of Light Ministry, the course aims to provide women with biblical guidance on building healthy marriages and developing practical relationship skills. Masika stated that she initiated the program after observing that many women struggle in their marriages and lack proper mentorship.

The announcement has triggered a public debate regarding gender roles and the focus of marriage counseling. Journalist and activist Janet Mbugua questioned the program's emphasis on women's responsibilities, suggesting that there is insufficient attention given to the role of husbands. Conversely, supporters of the masterclass argue that women should have the freedom to seek faith-based relationship guidance if they find it beneficial.

Addressing the criticism, Masika clarified that the curriculum does not suggest women are responsible for their partners' abusive behavior. She emphasized that the program seeks to redefine humility as a form of strength and dignity, rather than weakness or silence. Masika stated that the goal is to equip women to build homes that reflect biblical wisdom while maintaining their personal purpose.
