Federal Judge Rules Iowa Must Allow Satanic Temple Capitol Event

A federal judge has ordered Iowa state officials to permit a local chapter of The Satanic Temple to host a holiday event at the state Capitol. Chief U.S. District Judge Stephanie M. Rose ruled that the Iowa Department of Administrative Services violated the group's First Amendment rights by repeatedly denying their permit applications between 2024 and 2026. The court determined that officials could not exclude the gathering based on their interpretation of the Krampus figure, a demonic character from European folklore.

The injunction allows the organization to proceed with a planned celebration featuring caroling, ornament-making, and activities for children. While the judge noted that the group must adhere to standard Capitol security screenings and event conditions, she emphasized that the government cannot discriminate against religious expression based on viewpoint. The ACLU of Iowa, which represented the group, welcomed the decision as a protection of constitutional principles.

In response to the ruling, the office of Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced plans to appeal the decision. The case highlights ongoing legal debates regarding the use of public spaces for religious displays and the limits of government authority in regulating speech within state buildings.
