Indonesian Government Upholds Approval for Protestant Church Construction in West Java
Indonesian authorities have reaffirmed their support for the construction of a Simalungun Protestant Christian Church (GKPS) in Cikopo village, West Java, despite ongoing opposition from local residents. The Purwakarta Community Alliance has organized protests and threatened legal action, arguing that the project lacks sufficient community support and questioning the validity of the construction permits.
In response to the protests, officials from the Ministry of Human Rights and the Ministry of Religious Affairs have defended the project's legality. Government representatives stated that the church has met all regulatory requirements, including documented land ownership and the necessary recommendations from local religious authorities. Officials cited evidence that 125 local residents had formally approved the construction during community consultations.
While the Purwakarta regent has pledged to maintain neutrality and encourage dialogue between the opposing parties, legal representatives for the community alliance have indicated they intend to challenge the project in court. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions regarding the establishment of places of worship in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.
