Odisha Denies Early Release for Convict in 1999 Missionary Murder Case

The Indian state of Odisha has officially rejected a plea for the premature release of Rabindra Kumar Pal, also known as Dara Singh. Singh is currently serving a life sentence for the 1999 murders of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons in Manoharpur village. The State Sentence Review Board denied the request on August 31, citing concerns over potential communal unrest and the risk of societal disturbance. The board noted that a crowd of 200 to 250 individuals gathered outside the district jail on August 15, reportedly chanting provocative slogans related to his potential release.

While prison authorities had previously recommended Singh for release based on good behavior, the board determined that his history of convictions in three separate murder cases warranted continued incarceration. The Supreme Court of India was informed of the decision on September 17 and has granted Singh the right to challenge the ruling. The United Christian Forum (UCF) issued a statement welcoming the decision, emphasizing that while Christian forgiveness is a personal spiritual act, it does not negate the necessity of legal consequences for criminal actions.
