Anglican Canon Andrew Shanks Remembered for Commitment to Jewish-Christian Dialogue

Canon Andrew Shanks, the former Canon Theologian of Manchester Cathedral, has passed away, prompting tributes from colleagues and community members. Serving in his role from 2004 to 2014, Shanks was recognized for his efforts to challenge apathy within the Church of England and his dedication to fostering interfaith relations.

In 2004, Shanks co-founded the Broughton Park Jewish Christian Dialogue Group alongside Hebrew scholar Irene Lancaster. Supported by the former Bishop of Manchester, Nigel McCulloch, the group has continued for 18 years. Colleagues recall Shanks as a courageous figure who frequently advocated for deeper understanding between the two faiths. Notably, he publicly criticized the 2006 York Anglican Synod’s decision to boycott Israeli businesses, questioning how such actions impacted the Jewish community's sense of belonging in England.

Beyond his advocacy, Shanks proposed that the Anglican Communion adopt an annual service of repentance modeled after the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. His work often explored the theological intersections between Christian and Jewish traditions, including the concept of covenant and the significance of Jewish holidays.
