Former Armenian Aid Worker Shares Testimony of Imprisonment and Forgiveness
Gevorg Sujyan, an Armenian aid worker who spent five years in Azerbaijani captivity, recently shared his story of survival and faith during a meeting in Yerevan. Captured in November 2020 while delivering humanitarian aid to Nagorno-Karabakh, Sujyan was released in January 2026 as part of a prisoner exchange. He recounted enduring severe beatings and threats of execution during his time in detention.
Despite his traumatic experiences, Sujyan stated that he harbors no resentment toward his captors. He emphasized that his purpose in speaking is not to promote animosity, but to advocate for other Armenians who remain imprisoned. Sujyan expressed that he struggles to find peace or return to a normal life, noting that his freedom feels incomplete while others continue to suffer in captivity. The event was organized by the nonprofit Save Armenia and the Center for Truth and Justice to highlight the ongoing plight of war survivors and those still held in the region.
