Filmmaker Adapts Nativity Story for Modern Urban Setting in New Film
Filmmaker Jimmy Jenkins is set to release a new film titled "God With Us" on November 13, which offers a contemporary retelling of the Nativity story. The project was inspired by a conversation Jenkins had with a 16-year-old incarcerated for murder, who expressed difficulty understanding the Bible and requested that the story of Jesus be presented in a context more familiar to his own life.
Set within an African American community, the film features actors Ashley Olivia Fisher and Aspen Kennedy as Mary Anne Thomas and Joseph "Junie" Love. The narrative follows the couple as they navigate the challenges of a miraculous pregnancy and a divine calling. The cast also includes Lil Rel Howery, Rotimi, and Clifton Powell.
Jenkins stated that the film is intended to reach audiences who may feel disconnected from traditional biblical narratives. To address potential concerns regarding the unconventional setting, the film includes a disclaimer clarifying that it is not intended to rewrite the Gospel, but rather to communicate the story in a language accessible to a new generation.
