Christian Family Faces Harassment and Eviction in Chhattisgarh

A Christian family in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh has been subjected to severe harassment and property damage after refusing to participate in a Hindu reconversion ceremony known as Ghar Wapsi. On July 2, a group of approximately 100 individuals reportedly surrounded the home of Kamal Sinha, demanding that the family renounce their faith. When the family declined, members of the group dismantled the roof of their residence, leaving the seven occupants exposed to monsoon rains and destroying their stored crops.

Following the incident, the family reported that their water and electricity supplies were severed, and they were forced to close their small grocery business. Local leaders allegedly accused the family of defiling the village and threatened further action if they did not leave the area. This event occurs within the context of Chhattisgarh’s anti-conversion laws, which advocacy groups claim are frequently used to intimidate religious minorities. Reports indicate that numerous Christian families in the region have faced similar pressures, leading to displacement and the loss of housing.
