World Evangelical Alliance Leader Visits Jordan Following Church Funeral Attack
The Rev. Botrus Mansour, secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance, led a delegation of evangelical and Baptist leaders to the village of Hmoud in Jordan’s Karak Governorate. The visit served to offer condolences and lay a wreath at the graves of nine individuals killed during a shooting at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church on October 23. At least 34 others were wounded in the attack.
During the visit, Mansour expressed solidarity with the grieving families and the broader Jordanian community. He praised the response of King Abdullah II and the royal family, describing the nation as a model of tolerance and citizenship. Mansour emphasized that the violence affected all Jordanians, regardless of faith, and advocated for national unity as a response to the tragedy.
The delegation also discussed future engagement with the region, encouraging global evangelicals to visit Jordan. These efforts are part of preparations for the 2030 commemoration of the 2,000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus at Bethany Beyond the Jordan. The visit followed recent Jordanian military actions in southern Syria, which the government linked to suspects involved in the church shooting.
