OpenAI Report Highlights High Volume of Religious Inquiries on ChatGPT

A recent analysis by OpenAI reveals that ChatGPT processes approximately 70 million religion-related inquiries weekly. Data collected between September 2025 and September 2026 indicates that Islam and Christianity account for the majority of these interactions, representing 45 percent and 34 percent of requests respectively. Other faiths, including Hinduism, Judaism, and Buddhism, comprise smaller portions of the total volume.

Regarding Christian-specific queries, approximately half focus on interpreting biblical scripture, while only 13 percent pertain to church practices, sermons, or worship. OpenAI noted that interest in religious topics consistently spikes during major holidays, such as Easter for Christians and Ramadan for Muslims. The company emphasized that users are primarily utilizing the technology to supplement their faith rather than replace it. OpenAI cautioned that AI should not serve as an arbiter of religious truth or a substitute for human spiritual guidance, noting that religious life remains fundamentally rooted in personal conviction, shared traditions, and community connections.
