Global Study Examines Youth Reliance on AI Companionship

A new global study titled The RELATE Project 2026, released by the Christian youth ministry Young Life, reveals that 35% of young people aged 13 to 24 now utilize artificial intelligence as a companion. The research, which surveyed over 7,000 individuals across 11 countries, indicates that 60% of these users feel more comfortable confiding in AI software than in their own friends or family members. While 89% of respondents use AI for practical tasks, the study highlights a trend where digital tools are increasingly filling gaps left by a decline in the number of close personal relationships reported since 2023.

The report also explored the intersection of technology and faith, finding that 41% of participants view AI as a reliable source for spiritual guidance, with younger respondents showing higher levels of trust in this area. Despite this, when asked about their primary influences for identity formation, the majority of participants still prioritize friends and family, while pastors, teachers, and coaches ranked lowest. Young Life noted that while AI usage is rising, the survey data simultaneously shows that young people continue to express a strong preference for in-person social interaction.
