German Catholic Church Proposes Gender-Inclusive Revisions to Liturgical Texts

The Roman Catholic Church in Germany is preparing to revise its official missal to incorporate more gender-inclusive language. Marius Linnenborn, director of the German Liturgical Institute, stated that the update aims to reflect contemporary linguistic sensitivities and improve inclusivity for women, such as expanding traditional references to "brothers" to include "sisters."

Linnenborn also indicated that the church intends to handle "strongly masculine images of God" with greater care. While no specific replacements for titles such as "Father" or "Son" have been announced, the proposal has prompted discussion regarding the theological implications of altering language that has been central to Christian doctrine for centuries.

These liturgical adjustments occur as the German Catholic Church navigates a period of significant membership decline. Data from the German Bishops’ Conference indicates that over 307,000 individuals formally left the institution in 2025, leaving a total membership of approximately 19.2 million. Church leaders continue to address these challenges amid broader societal shifts and the ongoing impact of historical scandals.
