Gateway Church Founder Robert Morris Hospitalized Following Fall

Robert Morris, the founder of Gateway Church, recently sustained facial injuries after a fall at his home. According to his attorney, Bill Mateja, Morris lost consciousness while in his garage and struck a vehicle and the concrete floor, resulting in three broken bones in his face. Medical professionals attributed the incident to a combination of blood pressure medication and an empty stomach. Morris is currently recovering from the injuries.

This event follows a period of significant legal and personal turmoil for the former pastor. Morris resigned from the Texas-based megachurch in 2024 following allegations of sexual abuse involving a minor in the 1980s. He subsequently pleaded guilty to related charges and completed a six-month jail sentence in March 2026.

Separately, a defamation lawsuit filed by his accuser, Cindy Clemishire, against Morris and Gateway Church was recently dismissed by the Fifth Court of Appeals, which cited the ecclesiastical abstention doctrine. Attorneys for Clemishire have stated their intention to petition the Texas Supreme Court to review the appellate court's decision.
