Global Anglican Communion to Establish Administrative Headquarters in Abuja

The Global Anglican Council, led by Gafcon, announced on August 29 that it will establish its administrative headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. The decision was finalized during a council meeting held in Recife, Brazil, on August 22. Archbishop Laurent Mbanda, chairman of the council, stated that while digital communication facilitates global collaboration, a physical base is essential for the fellowship's mission and shared life.

This move follows the group's October 2025 declaration that it no longer recognizes the authority of the Archbishop of Canterbury or the traditional Instruments of Communion. The council is currently coordinating with the Church of Nigeria to develop the site, which leaders envision eventually serving as a hub for training and equipping clergy. While no specific budget or timeline has been established, the choice of Abuja reflects the city's significance to the movement, having hosted the inaugural Global Anglican Communion conference in March 2026. That gathering, known as G26, brought together nearly 500 leaders from 27 provinces and resulted in the Abuja Affirmation, which formally reordered the group as a global church.
