Former Trustee Files Lawsuit Alleging Financial Misconduct at Allen University

Karol Widemon Montgomery, a former board member of Allen University, has filed a federal lawsuit against the historically Black institution, the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and several high-ranking officials. The complaint, which spans nearly 400 pages, alleges a pattern of financial misappropriation and the misuse of university property. Montgomery claims that leadership failed to investigate these issues and actively worked to conceal potential misconduct.

The lawsuit names several prominent figures as defendants, including current board Chairman Bishop James Davis, former Chairman Bishop Samuel Green, and former university President Ernest McNealey. Montgomery, an attorney, asserts that the defendants engaged in a conspiracy to protect their interests at the expense of the university, its students, and its donors. She is seeking independent accounting and accountability for the alleged financial losses.

Founded in 1870 by AME ministers to educate formerly enslaved individuals, Allen University remains affiliated with the denomination. Montgomery stated that her goal is to recover funds she believes are owed to the school rather than to harm the institution. The defendants have not yet publicly responded to the specific allegations of racketeering and conspiracy outlined in the amended complaint.
