First Cornish Language Eucharistic Setting Receives Cultural Recognition

The Cornish People’s Mass, a newly composed liturgical setting performed entirely in the Cornish language, has been honored for its cultural significance. The project, inspired by Irish folk-style liturgical music, was commissioned by the Reverend Canon Jane Kneebone and composed by folk musician Mike O’Connor. It represents a milestone for the Cornish language, a Celtic tongue that, unlike Welsh, did not receive a formal Bible or Prayer Book translation during the Reformation era.

The inaugural service took place on June 3, 2026, at Truro Cathedral, drawing over 100 attendees from across the region. While some participants initially anticipated a performance-based event, many reported that the service was a deeply spiritual and prayerful experience. The liturgy serves as a modern effort to integrate the revived Cornish language into contemporary worship, reflecting ongoing initiatives to preserve the region's linguistic heritage. The event was also broadcast via livestream and remains available for viewing online.
