U.S. Department of Education Investigates Massachusetts School District Over Parental Rights

The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into the Northborough-Southborough Regional School District regarding allegations that school officials facilitated a student's social gender transition without parental consent. Federal authorities are examining whether the district violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) by withholding information from the parents of a student at Algonquin Regional High School.

Joseph and Arlene Kutzko, the parents of the student, allege that school staff conducted counseling sessions under the guise of academic tutoring. Following their objections to the school's actions and their refusal to affirm the transition based on their Catholic faith, the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families removed the teenager from their custody in December 2024. The parents are currently suing state officials, and a court hearing regarding the custody case is set for October 29. A judge has issued a temporary order preventing the student from receiving testosterone treatment while the legal proceedings continue.
