New Docuseries Revisits 2010 Chilean Mine Rescue Effort

A new three-part docuseries titled “Chilean Mine Rescue: Race Against Time” is set to premiere on National Geographic, offering a retrospective on the 2010 collapse at the San José mine in Chile. The series utilizes previously unseen footage and interviews to document the 69-day ordeal that began when 33 miners were trapped over 2,000 feet underground in the Atacama Desert.

Among those featured is engineer Igor Proestakis, who was 24 years old when he contributed to “Plan B,” one of the drilling strategies employed to reach the men. Proestakis recounts the intense 39-day period of continuous work required to create an escape route through solid rock. He describes the profound emotional impact of witnessing the first miner successfully reach the surface, an event that marked the culmination of the international rescue effort. The documentary explores the technical challenges and the human stories behind the mission that captured global attention after the miners were confirmed alive on August 22, 2010.
