Alister McGrath Declares New Atheism Movement in Decline
Alister McGrath, emeritus professor in science and religion at Oxford University, recently stated that the New Atheism movement has lost its momentum. Reflecting on the two decades since the publication of Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion, McGrath argued that the movement failed to address fundamental human questions regarding meaning, purpose, and significance. He noted that he is currently observing a renewed interest in Christianity among younger generations.
McGrath characterized the earlier approach of prominent New Atheists as an aggressive assertion of beliefs presented as incontestable truths. This assessment is echoed by some contemporary critics, including podcaster Alex O’Connor. While acknowledging the influence of figures like Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens, O’Connor suggested that these earlier proponents often lacked a deep understanding of the theological material they sought to critique. McGrath maintains that Christianity remains uniquely positioned to engage with the deepest aspirations of humanity.
