Sudanese Church Faces Demolition Amid Property Dispute
The Sudanese Church of Christ in Omdurman is facing the threat of demolition after local land authorities claimed the building sits on public land. Pastor Tia Alasara Malasa Kuku stated that officials arrived in July to issue the warning, despite the congregation possessing property deeds for the site, which has been in use since the early 1980s. Church leaders have attempted to resolve the issue through government channels, but report that their documentation remains stalled within the bureaucracy of the Department of Engineering Affairs and Urban Planning.
While authorities maintain the structure is illegal, church leadership characterizes the situation as part of a broader pattern of systematic religious persecution against Christians in Sudan. The congregation, which serves approximately 300 members, remains in a state of uncertainty as the threat of destruction persists. Similar concerns have been reported elsewhere in the region, including a June incident where a Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church site in the Mayo Angola area was also warned of potential demolition by local planning officials.
