Mother challenges UK court ruling to withdraw life-sustaining treatment for son

A mother, identified as FN, is challenging a London Court of Protection ruling that authorizes the withdrawal of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration from her 28-year-old son, FHR. Justice John McKendrick ruled on August 26 that ending the treatment is in the patient's best interests. This decision reportedly contradicts the unanimous view of the family and the clinicians who were treating the man as of March 2025.

FHR sustained a severe brain injury in 2020 and was cared for at home by his mother for nearly five years. In 2025, the court ordered his transfer to a care facility for a neurological assessment, from which he did not return. FN alleges that the facility barred her from in-person visits for 16 months following disputes over his care, during which time his health deteriorated. The case is currently subject to a strict Transparency Order, limiting public disclosure of details while the patient remains alive. FN has launched a petition seeking to challenge the court's decision and raise broader questions regarding legal safeguards for individuals unable to advocate for themselves.
