Chinese Pastor Remains Missing Months After March Arrest

Pastor Wang Sanyuan, the 73-year-old leader of Chanchunli Church in Ji’nan, China, remains missing following his arrest at his home in March. Despite leading a government-registered Three-Self Patriotic Church with hundreds of congregants, his family has received no information regarding his location or the charges filed against him. His relatives have expressed significant concern for his health, noting that he suffers from serious cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions that have required past hospitalizations.

Local observers suggest the detention may be linked to long-standing tensions between the church and local authorities. The congregation previously faced conflict with officials in 2009, when the church building was demolished to facilitate commercial development. Although congregants protested the seizure and the removal of Pastor Wang from his leadership roles, the church has continued to face pressure. Supporters of the pastor believe his current detention is an attempt by authorities to settle historical grievances related to his past resistance against government interference.
