Faith-based volunteers to provide support at polling locations during election

A coalition known as Faiths United in Saving Democracy has organized over 1,200 chaplains and peacekeepers to provide support and comfort to voters at polling locations across nine states. These volunteers, representing various religious traditions, will be stationed outside voting sites in areas including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia. Organizers state the initiative is nonpartisan and intended to help maintain a calm environment for those casting ballots.

Participants have undergone training to manage potential tensions and understand voter rights. While the coalition includes many moderate and progressive groups, organizers emphasize that the chaplains remain neutral and do not take political sides. Volunteers will be identifiable by specific hats or vests and will operate in accordance with state laws regarding distance from polling entrances. Some participants, such as Presbyterian pastor Karen Hagen, noted that their presence aims to assist voters who may feel anxious or intimidated during the election process.
