Survey reveals Canadian interest in Jesus despite skepticism toward organized religion

A national survey titled 'Seeds of Openness,' conducted by the Angus Reid Group in partnership with Alpha Canada and The Message Canada, indicates that many Canadians hold positive views of Jesus while remaining critical of the Christian faith. The study, which surveyed 3,000 adults in early 2026, found that 76% of respondents view Jesus as loving and 73% as selfless. Conversely, a majority of participants characterized Christianity as judgmental, divisive, or controlling.

Despite these negative perceptions of organized religion, the research suggests a persistent interest in spiritual matters. Approximately 70% of respondents frequently contemplate topics such as purpose, meaning, and life after death. Dr. Bill Hogg, president of The Message Canada, noted that these findings highlight a significant opportunity for churches to address the existential questions held by the public. While many Canadians identify as spiritual, the report also notes that roughly three-quarters of non-Christians expressed no interest in exploring Christianity, and many reported feeling uncomfortable when the subject of faith is raised in conversation.
