Belgian King Intervenes as Coalition Government Faces Budget Crisis

King Philippe of Belgium has initiated consultations with political leaders to prevent the collapse of Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s five-party coalition. The government faced a potential dissolution after negotiations regarding the 2027 federal budget failed, leading De Wever to offer his resignation on Monday. The King has declined to accept the resignation, granting the coalition additional time to resolve internal disputes.

The crisis stems from disagreements over a proposed 10 billion euro ($11.2 billion) plan to address the nation's budget deficit and mounting debt. The New Flemish Alliance and the Reformist Movement advocate for significant spending cuts, particularly in the healthcare sector. Conversely, coalition partners including the Vooruit party, the Christian Democratic and Flemish party, and Les Engagés argue that the burden should be shared through increased taxation on wealthier citizens.

While the political deadlock persists, some coalition members have expressed a desire to maintain the current government structure. Prime Minister De Wever is scheduled to return to the royal palace on November 6 for further discussions. The Royal Palace has emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the risks of a prolonged crisis during a period of economic and geopolitical instability.
