Zimbabwe Declares State of Disaster Following Fatal Church Bus Crash

A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a haulage truck in Zimbabwe has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people, with seven others sustaining injuries. The accident occurred on Friday evening near Chivhu, approximately 87 miles south of Harare, as members of the African Apostolic Church were traveling to a religious conference. Police reports indicate the truck, which was transporting mining equipment from South Africa, struck the minibus while attempting to pass another vehicle.

While reports on the exact sequence of fatalities vary, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe stated that 24 victims died at the scene, with three additional passengers passing away later at Chivhu General Hospital. Other officials initially reported 23 deaths at the site. The minibus was reportedly overloaded, carrying as many as 34 passengers at the time of the crash. In response to the tragedy, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster, enabling the government to mobilize resources to assist the affected families with medical and burial expenses.
