Argentina Reports Increase in Youth Suicide Rates

A recent report from the Criminal Policy Observatory indicates that Argentina recorded 5,209 suicides in 2025, marking a 22.6% increase from the previous year. Data from 2024 highlights that individuals aged 15 to 34 accounted for 45.3% of these cases, with suicide emerging as the leading cause of death within this demographic. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that these figures reflect a complex intersection of personal, social, and community factors rather than a single cause.

Experts, including political scientist Gastón Bruno, advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to youth support that prioritizes the active participation of adolescents in program design. Bruno suggests that creating relevant spaces for young people requires understanding their cultural habits and fostering environments where they feel heard and respected. Furthermore, he stresses that while volunteers in churches and community organizations play a vital role, they require professional training to effectively recognize warning signs and provide consistent, long-term support. UNICEF Argentina similarly calls for cross-sector collaboration to address the underlying distress facing the nation's youth.
