Archaeologists identify site of ancient Christian church in northern Italy
Archaeologists from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice have identified the likely location of an early Christian church and a bishop’s palace in the ancient city of Altino. The discovery, announced in mid-October 2026, provides physical evidence for structures previously known only through historical records, including a letter written by St. Jerome in A.D. 396.
Excavations conducted throughout 2025 and 2026 revealed the site, which aligns with St. Jerome’s descriptions of the church’s interior, including its altar and sacred vessels. Project director Diego Calaon noted that the findings offer new insight into the historical transition from Altino to the Venetian Lagoon, suggesting a managed transformation rather than a sudden migration. The research team, working in collaboration with the Altino Archaeological Park and local museums, believes the site represents a significant link to the region's early Christian heritage.
