Albert Mohler Clarifies Stance on Blasphemy Laws and Christian Nationalism

Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has issued a clarification regarding his recent comments on blasphemy laws and Christian nationalism. The remarks, which drew criticism from fellow Baptist leaders including Richard Land, were made during a debate at New Saint Andrews College and in a book project titled Five Views on Christian Nationalism. In these forums, Mohler had discussed the potential for public officials to formally acknowledge the Holy Trinity and the moral authority of the Bible.

In a subsequent opinion piece, Mohler explained that his comments were intended as a response to a hypothetical scenario involving a post-U.S. regional nation with a majority Evangelical population, rather than a proposal for current American policy. He stated that he does not support the implementation of blasphemy laws and emphasized his commitment to Baptist principles regarding the freedom of conscience. Mohler clarified that his goal was to advocate for a constitutional foundation for human rights and dignity rooted in the acknowledgment of a Creator, similar to the language found in the Declaration of Independence.
