Missionary Sam James Documents Early Baptist History in Vietnam

At 94 years old, Southern Baptist missionary Sam James has published a new book titled "Birth in the Midst of War: A History of Baptist Beginnings in Vietnam, 1959-1975." The work chronicles the establishment and survival of Baptist churches in Vietnam during a period of significant political instability and conflict. James, who served in the region until the fall of Saigon in 1975, spent five years researching and writing the account to preserve the legacy of the early missionaries and the first generation of Vietnamese converts.

James stated that he was prompted to write the book after receiving numerous inquiries from students, researchers, and Vietnamese Americans who struggled to find documented information regarding the origins of the Baptist movement in the country. Recognizing that he is among the last surviving missionaries from that era, James sought to provide a reliable historical record for future generations. Despite his advanced age, James continues to participate in occasional mission trips to Vietnam, maintaining his long-standing connection to the region's Christian community.
