Historic Michigan church building destroyed in downtown fire

A historic church building located on the campus of LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was destroyed by a fire that broke out late Wednesday night, August 26, 2026. Fire officials noted that the blaze likely burned for several hours before emergency services were notified, making the fire difficult to contain due to the building's complex layout and smoke accumulation.

Three firefighters sustained injuries while battling the flames, with two individuals struck by falling bricks. All three were treated at a local emergency room and have since returned to full duty. Captain Ryan Sparks of the Grand Rapids Fire Department explained that the age and structure of the building presented significant challenges for responders.

The structure, originally built in 1894 for the All Souls Universalist congregation, was a notable piece of local architecture. Rev. Peter Jonker expressed sorrow over the loss, noting that the congregation had intended to use the building for ministry initiatives aimed at supporting housing-challenged neighbors in the downtown area.
