Indonesian Military Deploys to Jakarta Amid High-Level Wiretapping Scandal

The Indonesian military has deployed over 20,000 personnel to Jakarta following the discovery of an alleged illegal surveillance operation targeting President Prabowo Subianto. The investigation has resulted in the detention of three senior police generals, including the president's recently appointed chief of staff, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was dismissed from his post on Wednesday. Lieutenant General Ariyo Windutomo has been named as the acting chief of staff.

Presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi stated that the surveillance, which reportedly targeted government officials, journalists, and business leaders between 2025 and 2026, could be classified as treason. However, legal affairs minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra noted that investigators have not yet uncovered evidence to support treason charges. The motive behind the operation remains under investigation, and authorities report that suspects allegedly attempted to delete intercepted communications in late October.

As military convoys enter the capital, members of the Christian community have expressed concern regarding the nation's stability. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to investigate the scope of the surveillance and the involvement of high-ranking officials.
