Study Highlights Mental Health Challenges Among North American Worship Leaders

A recent study by the independent research collaborative Worship Leader Research (WLR) reveals that while nearly 80 percent of worship leaders report a strong sense of purpose, many struggle with significant mental health challenges. Surveying over 3,300 worship leaders across North America, the study found that only 3.4 percent rated their mental health as excellent. This figure stands in stark contrast to a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, which indicated that 48 percent of the general American adult population described their mental health as excellent or very good.

Industry observers note that worship leaders often face unique pressures, including the expectation to maintain high-quality, engaging Sunday services while balancing administrative duties, technical troubleshooting, and other ministry roles. These demands contribute to a relatively short average tenure of two to three years. Furthermore, the WLR data suggests that 87 percent of respondents do not regularly consult with mental health professionals or spiritual mentors, highlighting a potential gap in support systems for those serving in these vocational roles.
