The Life and Conversion of Hymn Writer John Newton

John Newton, the 18th-century author of the hymn "Amazing Grace," is remembered for a life marked by profound spiritual transformation. Born in London to a devout mother who introduced him to Scripture, Newton drifted into a life of immorality, drunkenness, and blasphemy during his youth. He eventually became involved in the slave trade, serving as a captain on ships where he participated in and witnessed significant cruelty. During this period, he was even abandoned on the coast of Africa, where he endured harsh treatment and enslavement himself.

Newton’s life changed in 1748 while he was returning to England. Caught in a violent storm that threatened to sink his ship, he began to reflect on his life and spiritual state. Newton described this moment as the beginning of his conversion to Christianity, attributing his rescue and subsequent change of heart to the grace of God. Following this experience, he left his former life behind, eventually becoming a clergyman. He credited his mother’s early influence and the mercy of God for his transition from a life of rebellion to one of faith.
