Chicago White Sox Advance in Postseason Following Papal Correspondence

The Chicago White Sox have secured their first Major League Baseball postseason series victory in 21 years, defeating the Houston Astros in two consecutive games. The team’s advancement to the American League Division Series follows the public sharing of a letter sent to team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf by Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and long-time supporter of the franchise.

In the correspondence dated September 9, the pontiff expressed gratitude for a previous message from the team and reflected on the role of sports in fostering community and solidarity. The Pope wrote that sports can serve as a "school of life" where participants learn the value of mutual respect and cooperation. He concluded the letter by invoking blessings upon the organization and its associates.

The team’s postseason success coincides with recent efforts to celebrate the Pope’s connection to the city, including an "August 11 Pope Night" where approximately 40,000 fans received commemorative hats. The White Sox are now scheduled to face the Cleveland Guardians in a best-of-five series beginning this Saturday.
