Navigating Political Disagreement Within the Christian Community
In a recent column for Christianity Today, graduate student Kristen Berry explores how believers can maintain unity while navigating political differences. Drawing on Matthew 22:37–38, Genesis 1:27, Mark 12:31, and various Pauline epistles, Berry outlines four foundational principles intended to guide Christians in their public and private lives.
Berry emphasizes that ultimate allegiance must remain with God rather than political parties. She argues that because all people are created in the image of God, they deserve dignity regardless of their political affiliation. Furthermore, she highlights the biblical mandates to love one's neighbor and to pursue humility and unity within the body of Christ. According to the author, political disagreement becomes problematic when it leads to the dehumanization of others, the justification of injustice, or the conflation of the gospel with specific political ideologies. She encourages believers to approach these tensions with humility, keeping their focus on God’s sovereignty.
