Reflecting on the Admonitions of Jesus in Revelation

In a recent reflection, the author explores the tension between the gentle, compassionate Jesus of the Gospels and the authoritative, scrutinizing figure presented in the book of Revelation. While acknowledging Jesus’ invitation to rest in Matthew 11:28–30, the author argues that believers must also heed the warnings Christ issued to the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3. These passages, the author suggests, reveal a Christ who possesses total knowledge of the church’s works, failures, and hidden compromises.

Drawing on the example of the church at Ephesus, the author discusses the concept of “disordered loves,” a term attributed to Augustine. The author notes that while the Ephesian church was commended for its perseverance, discernment, and commitment to sound doctrine, it faced correction for its misplaced priorities. The author encourages readers to view these biblical admonitions as an opportunity for self-examination, urging believers to listen carefully to what the Spirit says to the churches and to take Christ’s warnings with the utmost seriousness.
