World Evangelical Alliance leaders discuss fundraising at Latin American assembly
During the 13th General Assembly of the Latin Evangelical Alliance (AEL) in San José, Costa Rica, leaders from the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) addressed the necessity of sustainable financial support for ministry. Secretary General Rev. Botrus Mansour and Global Leadership Institute leader Brad Smith participated in a panel titled “The Role of the Leader in Raising Money,” held from October 12 to 16.
Smith emphasized that modern evangelical work, which relies on independent ministries and global networks, requires consistent funding to advance the kingdom of God. He argued that fundraising should not be viewed as begging, but rather as a process of building relationships of mutual trust and discipleship.
Mansour, drawing on his experience as a Palestinian Arab leader, noted that cultural stigmas, such as a culture of shame, often hinder leaders from seeking financial support. He encouraged attendees to reframe fundraising as a spiritual invitation for partners to join in the mission of the church. Both speakers urged national alliance heads to overcome their fears of failure by working in teams and fostering strategic partnerships to ensure their organizations remain financially stable.
