Christian student groups sue Virginia State University over new governance policy

Two Christian student organizations, Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship, have filed a lawsuit against Virginia State University in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The legal action challenges a recent university policy that requires Christian student groups to operate under the governance of a single university-employed campus minister, Thomas Wynn, and a faculty advisory board. The plaintiffs argue that this mandate infringes upon their constitutional rights to free speech, free exercise of religion, and expressive association.

The lawsuit alleges that the policy grants the university authority to control the content of religious events and determine acceptable Christian practices. Furthermore, the complaint claims the policy is discriminatory because it explicitly exempts non-Christian organizations, such as the Muslim Students Association, from this oversight. According to the filing, campus minister Thomas Wynn stated the policy was implemented for the benefit of the university to bring faith-based entities under centralized advisement. The student groups contend that the policy forces them to compromise their doctrinal autonomy by placing them under the influence of a single administrative entity.
