US Orthodox Groups Divided Over Religious Freedom Allegations in Ukraine

Orthodox communities in the United States are expressing conflicting views regarding the state of religious freedom in Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion. The debate intensified after New York’s St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine presented President Volodymyr Zelensky with its 2026 Beacon of Hope Award, citing the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Organizers framed the award as a gesture of solidarity between those who have endured acts of terror.

Conversely, the advocacy group Orthodox Reflections organized protests against the ceremony, alleging that the Ukrainian government is actively persecuting the Orthodox Church. The group claims that authorities have seized church properties, filed criminal charges against clergy, and forcibly conscripted priests into the military. These allegations have gained traction among some American political conservatives, including Vice President JD Vance, who has publicly criticized Ukraine’s treatment of traditional Christian communities.

Meanwhile, local Ukrainian believers report feeling increasingly isolated as international support fluctuates. Anton Kaluzhny of Kyiv’s New Life Church noted that American evangelical backing has declined, leaving many local congregations struggling to navigate the impact of the war and shifting political narratives.
