U.S. Initiates Gaza Weapons Surrender Survey Amid Security Concerns

The Trump administration has deployed an American team to Gaza to identify potential sites for the surrender of weapons by Hamas. This initiative, overseen by the President’s Board of Peace, aims to facilitate the demilitarization of the region as a precursor to establishing a Palestinian civilian administration. Initial surveys are slated for Rafah and Khan Yunis, areas currently under Israeli military control.

Despite the U.S. effort, Israeli defense officials have expressed significant skepticism regarding the plan's viability. Intelligence assessments suggest that Hamas is actively rebuilding its military capabilities and preparing for further conflict rather than pursuing disarmament. Critics point to the group's foundational ideology, which maintains a commitment to armed resistance, as a primary obstacle to voluntary surrender.

Disagreements persist regarding the final status of collected armaments. While a July proposal suggested placing weapons under the supervision of a technocratic Palestinian government, Israel has rejected this arrangement, maintaining that it does not sufficiently address security requirements.
