US Episcopal Church membership drops below 1.5 million
The US Episcopal Church has reported a continued decline in membership, with the latest Parochial Report placing total membership at 1,425,065. This figure represents a significant decrease from the nearly 2 million members recorded in 2015. Average in-person Sunday attendance also saw a slight dip, falling to 407,001 in 2025 from 413,034 the previous year, though the Church noted that changes in data collection methods necessitate caution when making historical comparisons.
Data from a 2024 Hartford Institute of Religion Research survey highlights demographic challenges, noting that the median age of members is 60, with 57% of congregants aged 65 or older. Only 10% of the membership falls within the 18 to 34 age range. The report characterizes recent growth as "switching, not conversion," observing that 77% of newcomers transferred from other congregations, while only 3% were attending church for the first time. While the denomination has seen some recovery in attendance since the 2021 pandemic low, it remains below pre-pandemic levels, with an additional 116,936 people participating via livestream.
