Thousands Protest in Turkey Over Government Crackdown on Independent Media

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Istanbul and Ankara on October 24 to protest against the Turkish government's intensifying restrictions on independent journalism. Participants, including activists and opposition representatives, called for an end to censorship and the release of reporters currently held in custody. Police estimates suggest at least 3,000 people attended the protests in each city.

The Turkish Journalists’ Union reports that 11 journalists have been imprisoned in the last two months. Recent government actions include the suspension of the opposition broadcaster Halk TV, which authorities claim is linked to financial crimes, and the blocking of the news outlet T24 over alleged content violations. Press freedom advocates characterize these moves as politically motivated, while the government maintains that all legal actions are based on criminal offenses rather than journalistic activity.

International observers, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, have expressed concern over the state of media freedom in Turkey, noting that at least 22 journalists have been detained under disinformation laws this year. Turkey currently ranks 163rd out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index.
