Ugandan Court Sentences Nine Individuals for Murder of Susan Magara

A Ugandan High Court has sentenced two individuals to death and seven others to life imprisonment for the 2018 kidnapping and murder of Susan Magara, a Christian accountant. Judge Alex Mackay Ajiji presided over the sentencing, noting that the crime was linked to a criminal network allegedly funding Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The court found that the perpetrators used violence and intimidation to advance their objectives.

Magara was abducted in Kampala in February 2018 while driving home. Despite her family paying a ransom that was negotiated down from $1 million to approximately $200,000, she was killed by her captors. Investigators secured convictions after years of work involving DNA analysis, digital evidence, and asset tracking. Following the verdict, Bishop James Bukomeko of the Mityana Anglican Diocese condemned the violence and issued a call for peace and harmony within the region.
