Iraqi Christian Families Reflect on Displacement Following 2014 ISIS Advance

A report from International Christian Concern highlights the ongoing impact of the 2014 Islamic State (ISIS) offensive on Iraq’s Christian population. The account follows a family forced to flee their home with only minutes of preparation as militants advanced, marking the beginning of a widespread exodus that saw many families displaced to Erbil and eventually scattered across the globe.

While ISIS was eventually removed from the region, the report notes that many displaced Christians have not returned to their ancestral homes. Challenges such as damaged infrastructure, a lack of economic opportunity, and persistent security concerns have hindered resettlement efforts. For many, the return of their physical property does not equate to a return to their former lives, as the social fabric of their communities has been permanently altered by the mass migration of their neighbors and fellow believers.
